Spring 2009

Library to host American Chamber Trio

A free concert by the American Chamber Trio will be performed on Sunday, April 19 at 7:30 p.m. in the Community Room of the Christopher Center. The Trio, VU's Chamber Ensemble in Residence, will perform works from Johannes Brahms, Felix Mendelssohn, and Stephen Foster as part of the Valparaiso University's 150th Anniversary Celebration. The works have been chosen because they might have been heard in 1859 in a chamber music setting.

The Trio members include June DeForest, Daniel Morganstern, and Nicole Lee. Ms. DeForest has served as Concertmaster for the Joffrey Ballet and the Canadian Opera. She has served as the Drushel Distinguished Visiting Professor of Music and the College of Wooster and is currently on the faculty of Valparaiso University.

Mr. Morganstern has been praised as a 'first-rate cellist' in the New York Times and has plaed at Carnegie Recital Hall and Alice Tully Hall in New York City. He has served as Principal Cellist for the Lyric Opera of Chicago and the American Ballet Theatre at New York's Metropolitan Opera House for over thirty years.

Playing with the Trio, Ms. Lee has performed as soloist at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam and the Sarasota Opera House, and with several symphony orchestrats including the Vancouver Symphany Orchestra, the Florida West Coast Symphany Orchestra and the New Westminster Symphony.

The Trio will also premier an arrangement by William Ryden of Stephan Foster songs commissioned for this concert. William Ryden, in addition to his work as composer, arranger, conductor and performer, he is the editorial director for Bourne Co./International Music Company. He received his training at the American Conservatory of Music, Chicago; the Mannes College of Music, New York; and in private study with the late Hungarian maestro, Tibor Serly. Mr. Ryden's work covers the full spectrum of vocal, choral, solo, chamber and orchestral music.

The Trio will be playing Brahms's Trio in B Major, Op. 8. As Karl Geiringer says in Brahms: His Life and Work, this is an early example of his chamber music which exhibits "youthful freshness and tenderness of conception." Mendelssohn's Trio in D minor, Op. 49, which is one of his most successful chamber works, will also be performed.
